Old Course

The Old Course, with demanding shot values from the tees and the fairways, complements the North Course which offers wider playing corridors but requires a more exacting short game. The Old Course is a walking only golf course.

The tilted greens of the Old course are a throwback to courses like Garden City Golf Club,Rockaway Hunt Club or even Winged Foot where there is an open approach for players who want to bounce the ball into the greens, but they must take a different line of play to avail themselves of the option. The five short holes are reminiscent of the many William Flynn designs around Philadelphia, such as Rolling Green, Manufacturers and Lancaster, each of which also presents five great par-3's.

The Old Course was designed to reflect Stonewall's low key, natural and "golf only" personality.. As noted by Golf World with respect to the Old Course: "Stonewall has low-profile greens, fairways hugging side slopes and tall, tan fescue roughs. It has two of the finest par 4s anywhere, the sixth and eighth, and two of the plainest-looking par 4s — the 13th and 16th, that you'll ever double bogey."

HOLE 1

With two par 5s in the first three holes, you can get off to a flying start – or you can make a mess of it quickly. Factoring in the uphill tee shot and the prevailing wind, carrying the last bunker on the right from the tee is a big hit. With the green tilting off to the right and a pond on that side, playing the second just in front of the green is the safest bet.

Going for a long drive here means threading the needle between water and fairway bunkers, so it may be best to lay back. The green is skinny and falls away at the back left.

Your opponent’s start may have a good deal to do with strategy here; the hole can be played as a conservative three-shotter, or aggressively by flirting with the water off the tee. The green tilts left toward a deep hollow, so playing just short of the green in two is better than missing hole high to either side.

Playing into the woods, this short par 4 requires an accurate tee shot with an iron or hybrid short of a small brook, followed by a demanding pitch to a shallow target with bunkers behind.

The first of Stonewall’s five par 3s is one of its most demanding. The green sits in the loop of a creek; hole locations in the back or front right of the green require great precision from high above.

Most players in the field can carry the creek easily from the tee, but playing safely away from the creek to the left leaves a difficult angle to the green, tilting toward the creek as it rushes past the right side of the green. A layup to the right leaves a long second, but from the end of the right-hand fairway, you can play up away from the creek and let the slope bring the ball back to the hole.

With the green hanging off the end of a ridge, the guardian bunkers at the front and left are the deepest on the course. It’s also a tough green to putt, with part of it running away to the back and everything tilted to the left as well.

Playing back up toward the clubhouse, this is the toughest tee shot on the course, even though the fairway is actually one of the widest. With the fairway running along the top of a narrow ridge, the trouble to the left is all visible from the tee, but a steep fall lurks to the right as well. The green sits in a half bowl once you get past the deep front-left bunker.

It’s hard to call this a short hole, with the tee shot crossing the edge of a big farm pond, and the green just on the far bank. There is a ton of slope from right to left in the green, so you can play a bit right of the flag and let the ball come around, but you’ve got to get it up there.

HOLE 10

With trouble to both sides of the fairway and green, this is a tough driving hole. There is a long bunker just to the right of the green, and only the biggest of tee shots will give you a glimpse of it, so be sure you know exactly where the flag is each day.

When we built this hole it was a true three-shotter; today some may have a chance to get home in two, but you’ll have to shape both shots to do it. Shorter hitters are better off playing out to the right with the tee ball so they can hit back into the slope on the left with their second shots. The green has some of the trickiest breaks of any on the Old Course.

A classic drive-and-pitch hole with a bunker right across the front of the green. Some may choose to drive right up to the front, but remember that for any approach inside 100 yard, you’ll have to play off a bit of a downhill lie for the pitch.

Here is a tee shot for the big boys: it’s 260 yards and 30 feet uphill to the top, and the two fairway bunkers on the left eat into that the whole way. The green tilts hard from right to left and so does the approach, so you have to declare whether you’re flying it in or trying to play the bounce before choosing your line.

The tee shot is blind over the crest of the hill (and a natural-gas pipeline), but the tree line on the right is a helpful indicator for the direction of the fairway. This is a very small green falling away to the rear, with some internal contour to boot; winding up at the back is not the worst thing.

Playing into a wooded, rocky corner, this short hole has the smallest green on the course. It’s possible to land 30 yards short and left and run down onto the green, but it’s essential to stay to the left of the hole.

A big drive out of a wooded chute will clear the crest of a hill and significantly shorten the downhill second shot. This is the biggest green on the course and the most confounding, with a bit of tilt to the back and a crown through the middle.

When this hole was built originally, the founders made Tom Doak shorten it to 130 yards, but now you get to play the tee he originally envisioned. It’s a bit of a reverse Redan, with the approach open on the left and the green tilting away to the right behind a front bunker.

A good drive here is essential so you can enjoy the second shot, playing downhill to a green up against the clubhouse to the left. The clubhouse buildings and the stone wall behind are integral parts of the course, providing a counterweight to all of the bunkering short and right of the green.

Practice Facilities

Pictured below are a few photos of the Old Course's practice and warm-up facilities. First, is a photo of the short game practice area. Second, is the almost one acre practice tee. Third, is the courtyard within the clubhouse building complex, which is nestled between the stone wall framing the 18th green and the outside dining patio—grab a refreshment and practice your putting. Lucky are those who spend time here working.
